J. Hoberman, film critic for the
Village Voice for 30 years - and a personal hero - was fired Wednesday in a cost cutting move. Since he also works as a teacher and lecturer, I'm sure Mr. Hoberman will be just fine, but it's a sad day for thoughtful, intelligent journalism.

He uses a lot of big words. Just take this part of a sentence from his review of Laura: "Still, alternately sprightly and turgid, if abetted by its haunting, ubiquitous score..."
