Quickies: April 2016

Human Capital (2013) ✭✭✭½
Netflix

A foolish, prideful businessman (the great Fabrizio Bentivoglio) borrows to invest in a "can't lose" private hedge fund just before the financial crisis. Promptly his life goes to hell, causing a wide range of unfortunate events.  Human Capital is a complex story that gets a little a little deep in the weeds before it's all over, but the acting and production are uniformly excellent. If you like businessy dramas, give Human Capital a go.

Ici-Bas (2011) ✭✭½
TV5

Set during WWII, this film is the story of a 30-ish cloistered nun (Céline Sallette), who experiences romantic feelings for the first time. Her emotional confusion causes her to commit some acts that eventually lead to charges of treason. Based on a true story, the film has nice mood and pacing but loses all coherence near the end.

3 Hearts (2015) ✭✭✭½
Netflix DVD

This Hitchcock-esque romantic drama stars Gainsbourg, Deneuve and a host of other French acting royalty. It's all about how crossed wires and false assumptions can lead to a lifetime of domestic misery. The DVD has extra scenes from a NYFF conference, in which director Benoit Jacquot and Charlotte Gainsbourg pretend not to understand English. Very strange.

Love your Cate Blanchett header photo! The actress in "Human Capital" looks a bit like her, but I don't think it's her... is it?

No it's Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, but you're right there is a resemblance. And I just switched out Blanchet for Vikander before I saw your post. Perhaps Cate and her superb dentistry will make a return before long.

Nobody makes a dress look fabulous like Cate! She'll always be Galadriel to me...
