While the title characters may sound like 1960s era synthetic fabrics, Eric Rohmer's fairy tale of a film takes place much earlier than that, at a time when druids and nymphs walked the earth (well France anyway), and the invading Roman legions were nothing more than a slight annoyance. Other than that, the film is a fairly typical Rohmer idyll, as attractive young airheads dance, party and sulk through forest and meadow, searching for love and the occasional lost sheep. Basically if you like Rohmer's unique brand of simple storytelling, i.e. events within a scene occurring in real-time, you will like this slightly silly, yet entertaining fable. If you aren't a fan, well, there is nothing here that will change your mind. But I think we can all agree the passion and vigor for filmmaking that Rohmer displays at nearly 90 years young is remarkable.
